Why we need to see the garment

No two garments or materials are the same. Fabric weight, stretch, construction methods, and current fit all affect the approach, price, and timeline for your alteration.

By seeing your item in person, we can properly assess the fabric, structure, and details to recommend the right solution and provide accurate pricing and timing.

For the most accurate fitting, bring the shoes or undergarments that affect the garment's fit or length when relevant.

Wedding dress and formalwear fittings

Bridal gowns, prom dresses, and formalwear usually take more than one fitting to get right. Here is how it works, from your first visit to pickup.

  1. Consultation and first fitting

Bring the dress and wear the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear with it. We pin the fit, walk through what it needs, and give you pricing.

  2. We set your next fitting

Gowns almost always need at least one follow-up fitting, so we can check the changes on you before finishing.

  3. Additional fittings as needed

We keep refining until the fit is right. More involved gowns can take a few visits.

  4. Final fitting and pickup

Once everything sits right, we set your pickup date and your finished dress is ready to wear.

Plan ahead for prom and wedding season. From February through May we book up and wait times run longer. Come in at least 2 weeks before you need the dress, and earlier for weddings, so there is time for every fitting.

FAQ

Why can't everything be quoted by phone?

Fabric, construction, current fit, and condition all affect the work required. To provide accurate pricing and a reliable completion estimate, we need to see the garment in person.

Are walk-ins welcome?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome and preferred. No appointment is required for an in-person evaluation.

Is an appointment required?

No. Bring the garment during business hours and we will evaluate it with you in person.

How long do alterations take?

Timing depends on the garment and the work involved. Turnaround is often about 1 to 2 weeks, and can run longer during busy periods; simpler work may be quicker. We give a realistic completion estimate after we see the garment.

How many fittings does a wedding dress need?

Most gowns need more than one. Plan on a first fitting to pin and price the dress, at least one follow-up fitting, and a pickup date. During prom and wedding season, February through May, we book up, so come in at least 2 weeks ahead, and earlier for weddings.

Is rush work available?

Rush service may be available for an extra charge, depending on our current workload. Ask when you visit and we will let you know what is possible.

What should I bring to a fitting?

Bring the garment and, when relevant, the shoes or undergarments that affect its final fit or length.

Do you work on leather?

Usually not. Our machines cannot handle thicker leather like jackets, purses, and belts, so we turn most leather away. If you are not sure, bring it in and we will take a look and tell you honestly whether it is something we can do.

Do you sew on patches or do embroidery?

We sew on patches, and the price depends on the size of the patch and where it goes. We do not do embroidery.
